We can't talk about recovery with unemployment out there

In the recent recession America has seen 8.4 million jobs vanish – most of them having gone permanently. The politicians are taking advantage of this to make loud noises without anyone disclosing the truth.

It is useless to talk about financial recovery without solving unemployment. There are structural problems connected with unemployment.

To contain the declining living standards a heavy hand will be required to pull things up to a point when the economy will be self sustaining.

There is however very little talk about the infrastructure of the nature and the defective trade policies that have humbled many of American’s industries. Why is the country failing to compete with China in the 21st century? Why is America failing to provide her children with quality education that will produce the next generation of business persons, scientists, artists and workers?

Ed Rendell the Governor of Pennsylvania said in a conference recently that if action is not taken quickly in finding long-term solutions to the various problems USA would become a second rate power by the end of the next ten years. If the country does not act boldly then it will become “a cooked goose.”

But neither any of the political parties nor the media are coming out in the open about the dangerous problems in the very structure of the country’s society and economy. The living standards are fast falling but as yet there is no comprehensive plan for turning back this trend in the long term.

The conference was named “The Next American Economy: Transforming Energy and Infrastructure Investment.” It was organized by Brookings Institution and Lazard – a banking advisory firm.

While speaking at the conference Rendell made repeated use of words like “stunning” and “unbelievable” to paint a vocal picture of the state of the infrastructure of the country.

He repeated the warnings given out by the American Society of Civil Engineers for many years about “the broken water mains, gridlocked streets, crumbling dams and levees, and delayed flights that come from failing infrastructure have a negative impact on the checkbook and on the quality of life of each and every American.”

Those present at the conference were overwhelmed by a feeling of dismay looking back at what has been eroding into the vitals of the country during the last many years. There was awareness that all constructive plans put forward to solve the problem were being choked with the focus on quick short-term fixes by the government – more interested in party rivalry than anything else.

Unemployment is hitting hard United States and affecting the economy. Foreclosures are an example of this damage.
