foreclosure issue

The Stamford’s mayoral election is just two months away. The main issue however has facing the city has not been addressed as yet. This year the citizens of Stamford are paying another hike in taxes related to property. The rise in taxes is in spite, the fact that the country is facing the economic depression similar to the one in 1930’s.

Many have lost their jobs in Stamford coupled with the loss of health care coverage. The increase in property taxes has only made matters worse leading to foreclosures.

This problem is mainly due to the act that the current administration of Stamford and the representatives have been involved in constantly raising the wages of their laborers. As the chairman of board of representatives and as a mayoral candidate David Martin should take up some o the responsibilities.

After several complaints from the taxpayers, the several unions were involved in talks and wages were discussed so that the tax payers did not feel the burden. However there was still an increase-that too when the economic scenario of the country was so bad. According to an article by an advocate the state at present is locked in an increase of ages for next two years. They have also been given assurance against any lay outs.

The pay for the municipal workers takes a large portion of the budget. Another issue is the rising burden of the pensions. All of this is too paid by the taxes collected. The property tax is therefore set to rise on a yearly basis. The rising of taxes will discourage business units to a large extent too.

To put the tax structure under a wider perspective, the wall street journal indicated that Connecticut paid almost $7,007 per man, women and child. The tax foundation says that this more tax per capita than any other state except for New York and New Jersey.

This has resulted in zero hiring in Connecticut against 22 million new jobs in US. Due to the increased tax burdens the state has lost most of its population to other states. Though the editorial is pointed towards Connecticut’s tax burden most of it is because of the rising taxes of the residents of Stamford.

Even after the high tax, the residents of Stamford are facing many issues, including the need to overhaul the police department, schools etc.
