Reforms are not sufficiently strong to avoid foreclosures.

With each passing day it is becoming more difficult for the majority of Americans to convince themselves that the glass is half full of water; they now tend to see it as half empty. This is what the opinion polls read and that means bad news for the Democrats and the Obama team.

There is oil rushing out in the Mexican Gulf, the Afghanistan war is adding to the toxic cocktail of woes including unemployment and foreclosures. There is a lot of crowing going on about the legislative successes of the government – the stimulus and health care reforms but these are not enough to bring out the sun.

The Democrats under Obama got a rare opportunity given to them in the elections of 2008. But they failed to focus on unemployment. Neither did they call upon all Americans in a strong effort (that would have meant a lot of sacrifices from all – rulers and ruled) to find a solution to a swath of grave problems from over dependence on fossil fuel to the shameful condition of education and the urgency of restructuring the rotting framework of the system.

Under the umbrella move of job creation all this could have been achieved for short as well as long term benefits. The historic victory of Obama was clouded by his inheriting the mantle of the worst economic crisis but if the punch had been there the Republicans would not have been able to obstruct the passage of putting back citizens to work.

Obama had harped on the change mantra but without the backing of the working people it could not have had the desired effect. For this lapse the fearful consequences are being suffered.

The unemployed number is 15 million – as per official counting; reality is far worse. Even if it is presumed that there will be nor more economic back tracking and jobs are created at rate of about 200,000 per month, it would take about ten years for the country to go back to the point of 2007 when the recession started. But there is slim hope of that sustained growth in employment. In May a mere 41,000 jobs were generated in the private sector. The pit America has fallen into is deep and dark.

The government is however slapping itself on the back for commendable work done – stimulus package and health care changes. But the families battling survival are concerned about keeping their heads above water.
