foreclosure exit

Flint City hugs the River Flint. It is in Genesee County in Michigan State, USA. The county covers the metropolitan area of Flint and is the fourth biggest in Michigan. To understand Flint foreclosure listings one needs not only statistics and figures but a general idea of the economic scenario even before the bursting of the housing crisis.

Flint is famous as the birthplace of General Motors and also Flint-sit-down-strike of the 1930’s. It was instrumental in the shaping of United Auto Workers. Flint is also associated with the death throes of the fall of the automobile industry. This was a big factor leading up to Flint foreclosure listings.

The staggering numbers noted in foreclosures show the enormity of the slide. Many proposals have come forward to tackle the menace of Flint foreclosure listings but another new one has come forth which contradicts all others. The idea is to speed up the damage being done by Flint foreclosure listings. It may sound strange but this plan seems to be the best. Leaders are suggesting razing to the ground entire blocks and bringing down the city limits to viable realistic perimeters. The population would then be concentrated in a specific area.

Foreclosure homes are causing concern because these houses lying vacant have become magnets for crime and disease. The only way to contain these Flint foreclosure listings is by giving back to Nature what is being forcefully taken away in any case. Dan Kildee the Genesee County treasurer commented, “Decline in Flint is like gravity, a fact of life. We need to control it instead of letting it control us.”

Recession debuted in Flint quite some time ago together with other manufacturing cities. Police personnel and fire fighters are losing their jobs while the city grapples with a budget deficit amounting to $15 million. Many public schools are facing closure.

In trying to find a solution Flint is becoming an icon to be followed by another age. Few years the idea of planned shrinkage took roots in Michigan. The plan of setting up land banks somewhat alleviated the problem of vacant houses. Other states too are setting up land banks. Karina Pallagst of Shrinking Cities in a Global Perspective Program said, “Shrinkage is moving from an idea to a fact. There’s finally the insight that some cities just don’t have a choice.” And Flint is one such city.
