Shrewd Republicans quickly divined the weaknesses in the Obama government – appeasing bankers and the Blue Tooth within Democratic rank and file while not focusing on issues relevant to the man in the streets. Max Pappas of FreedomWorks wrote “The Obama administration has so far been successful in continuing to increase the ties between Wall Street and Washington, while at the same time demonizing bankers for political gain.
This presents a big opportunity for the right to throw off the image of being owned by business interests when what we really support are free markets.” It was a clever ploy to highlight the connections between Obama team and the banks while simultaneously disguising the Republican Party’s own intimate relationship with the corporate world of USA.
FreedomWorks, a non-profit body was the brainchild of Dick Armey a former Republican politicians. In the early part of 2009 it sniffed a growing anger of the extreme Right against Obama. There were strong racist feelings against a Black as President. Rumours began to spread about the place of birth of Obama and his Muslim background confusing his name with another infamous Muslim.
When the stimulus bill became law Tea Party events popped up in places like Seattle, Denver and Mesa. The protestors pointed to waste by the government. Those who hated Obama joined in. The protests began to snowball and form grass roots base.
Odd sections of the extreme right came to make up the Tea Party Movement – the Christian Right led by not a preacher but by former Chief Justice of Supreme Court Roy Moore. He had been pushed out of office in 2003 for installing a massive stone tablet enumerating the Ten Commandments on the lawns of court. His supporters believe that the law of God is superior to social laws.
Support came from anti-immigrant agitators who were dissatisfied with the weak agenda of McCain. There hero was Tom Tancredo a former congressman. Others were against the environmentalists and condemned the very proposition of climate change. They felt that the environmentalists are out to ruin the lives of Americans. Others like the followers of Joseph Farah and Orly Taitz joined in. They believed that Obama is a puppet in a global conspiracy to make Americans slaves.
The main base of the Tea Party is an old pull to become popular – the antipathy of all and sundry towards taxes. TEA equals to taxed-enough-already. They take their cue from the 1773 Boston Tea Party although the parallel cannot be drawn because then the cry as “No taxation without representation.”
