The nation has been experiencing the worst economic catastrophe since the time of the Great Depression. Residents of California are feeling gloomy and skeptical rather than hopeful as here and there news is trickling in that economic recovery is on its way.

The current unemployment figure is a staggering 11.9%. People are continuing to lose jobs and houses. The foreclosure tide remains unabated. Many families are beyond the ambit of health insurance schemes and for them and their children the future looks bleak and grim.

But if one pauses and looks beyond the immediate there are streaks of light cutting through the clouds. One must be prepared to be ready to embrace it and make the best of opportunities that are coming.

The conditions are changing in such a way that the working class will reap benefits. The economic indicators are showing signs of improvement right across the nation. The government is pro-worker and the support from such an administration is of vital importance. It is undertaking policies that are beneficial to the working people and genuine efforts are being made to tackle the problem of health care.

California is now getting federal funds from the stimulus package. It is making possible job training and building an infrastructure for new projects to essay forth. The construction section will soon get involved in a big way.
In California there are opportunities galore to take advantage of this change over to Green Economy. It can remain in the front ranks of the Green Jobs.

Propped up by the present infrastructure, the environmental policies and natural resources together with the talent available California is placed to take the lead under the changed mood. The Federal Government has acknowledged the lead position California occupies by investing significantly in these Green Jobs. It means workers will be in a good position to demand benefits, better wages together with these opportunities.

Preparation is of great importance to get the workers ready for this change. Thus cooperation must be facilitated between K-12 and the higher education systems. Opportunities for apprenticeship in the building and construction sector have to stepped up. The unions will have to be prepared to fill up the vacancies in the green jobs. The business section too has to be ready so as not to miss the bus. All those who have a stake should jointly act to reap a rich harvest from the winds of change.
